STARTING YOUR HOCKEY JOURNEY
No one begins as an expert.
Surrey Minor Hockey welcomes players of all experience levels, from children stepping onto the ice for the very first time to those who have already developed basic skating skills.
Our programs focus on creating a positive, fun, and supportive environment where players can build confidence, develop new skills, and enjoy the game alongside new teammates.
Whether your goal is recreational hockey or competitive hockey in the future, every Surrey Thunder player begins with the same exciting first step.
NEW PLAYER REGISTRATION PROCESS
Becoming part of the Thunder family starts with a few simple steps.
Gather your documents, submit them to our Registrar, and once everything has been reviewed, you'll receive a TeamSnap registration link to complete your registration.
Player Eligibility
Before beginning your new player registration, please take a moment to ensure your child meets the SMHA eligibility requirements.
If you have any questions, our Registrar is happy to help.

Players must be at least 4 years old by December 31 of the current hockey season to register with Surrey Minor Hockey.

Players must reside within the Surrey Minor Hockey Association boundaries with their custodial parent or legal guardian.

Previous hockey experience is not required.
Ages 5–8: Some skating experience is recommended but not required.
Ages 9–18: Basic skating ability while wearing full equipment is strongly recommended.
Required Registration Documents
Before the Registrar can create your child's TeamSnap profile, please email the required documents below. Once your submission has been reviewed, you'll receive an email with instructions to complete your registration.
Proof of Age One Document Required
Please provide a clear copy of one of the following:
- Canadian Birth Certificate
- Canadian Passport
The document must clearly show the player’s full legal name and date of birth.
Proof of Residency Three Documents Required
Please provide three current documents confirming the parent or guardian’s residential address.
Accepted proof of address includes:
- Utility bill—hydro, gas or water (preferred)
- Cable, satellite or internet bill
- Property or contents insurance
- Property tax bill or assessment
- Driver’s licence or vehicle insurance
- Bank or credit card statement
- GST statement, Income Tax Assessment or Child Tax Credit Notice
- School registration confirming the address
Documents should display the same current residential address and must fall within Surrey Minor Hockey’s boundaries.
Registration Form Complete and Submit the Form
Download and complete the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association Player Registration Certificate.
Complete all applicable fields and include the form when emailing your new player documents to the Registrar.

International Players: Permanent residents and international students may require additional documentation. Please scroll down for further information.
INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS
Additional Registration Requirements
If your child was born outside of Canada or is attending school in Canada as an international student, Hockey Canada and the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association (PCAHA) require additional documentation before registration can be approved.

Once the Registrar has reviewed your documentation and created your child's player profile, you'll receive an email with everything you need to complete registration.
