Player Development

Helping Every Player Reach Their Full Potential

Player development is at the heart of everything we do. From a player's first time on the ice through to competitive hockey, Surrey Minor Hockey provides age-appropriate coaching that builds confidence, develops skills, fosters teamwork, and inspires a lifelong love of the game.

Our Development Priorities

Building Skills for Hockey—and for Life

Our player-first approach focuses on six priorities that support each athlete's development on and off the ice.

Teamwork

Teaching players to communicate, cooperate and contribute while supporting teammates and working toward shared goals.

Sportsmanship

Encouraging respect for teammates, opponents, coaches and officials, while learning to compete with integrity and character.

How We Develop Players

Surrey Minor Hockey supports player growth through age-appropriate instruction, specialized development opportunities and purposeful practice environments. Each area of development is designed to help players strengthen their skills, improve their understanding of the game and build confidence on the ice.

Hockey IQ & Small-Area Games

Game-based activities help players learn how to read, understand and react to the play around them. Small-area games create more puck touches, quicker decisions and repeated competitive situations that develop awareness, creativity and confidence.

Our Coaching Philosophy

Great Coaching Builds More Than Great Players

Every player deserves a positive, supportive environment where they feel encouraged to learn, improve and enjoy the game. Our coaches play an important role in helping players develop their hockey skills, confidence, character and lifelong love of the sport.

How We Coach

Development Begins With the Right Environment

Player development is most successful when coaches create an environment built on respect, encouragement and continuous learning. Players should feel comfortable trying new things, responding to feedback and learning from both success and failure.

Our goal is to provide a rewarding hockey experience led by coaches who put the long-term development and well-being of players first.

01

Certified Coaches

Coaches are expected to meet applicable Hockey Canada certification and safety requirements, helping provide players with structured, age-appropriate and responsible instruction.

02

Mentorship & Collaboration

Coaches benefit from sharing experience, ideas and best practices. Collaboration helps build greater consistency and supports stronger learning environments throughout the association.

03

Positive Coaching

Encouragement, constructive feedback and mutual respect help players develop confidence. Positive coaching creates an environment where players remain engaged, motivated and excited to improve.

04

Learning Through Mistakes

Improvement requires players to experiment, take appropriate risks and occasionally make mistakes. Coaches help players understand those moments, respond positively and apply what they have learned.

05

Player-First Coaching

Coaching decisions should support the development, safety and enjoyment of the player. Competition matters, but the overall experience and long-term growth of young athletes come first.

Our greatest success is measured not only by wins, but by the confidence, character and lifelong love of hockey our players develop.
