Body Checking in Rep Hockey
Body checking is introduced at U15 in Rep hockey only, following Hockey Canada’s progressive checking pathway. Recreational (C) hockey does not permit body checking.

The U15 Development Stage
At U15, players are entering one of the biggest development stages in minor hockey. Physical maturity, decision-making and confidence continue to grow, allowing coaches to introduce more advanced individual and team concepts while maintaining a strong focus on skill development.

Areas of Focus at U15
As players progress through U15, practices and games become more demanding while continuing to prioritize long-term player development. Coaches focus on refining technical skills, improving hockey IQ and helping players apply what they've learned in faster, more competitive game situations.
Skating Under Pressure
Players refine acceleration, edge control, transitions and agility while reacting to opponents and changing game situations.
Puck Protection
Players develop greater confidence handling the puck in traffic, protecting possession and making plays under pressure.
Scoring & Finishing
Training focuses on shooting accuracy, quicker releases and creating scoring opportunities from different areas of the ice.
Game Awareness
Players learn to recognize developing plays, support teammates and make faster decisions with and without the puck.
Defensive Play
Players continue improving gap control, angling, stick positioning, puck retrievals and defensive-zone awareness.
Team Systems
Players develop a stronger understanding of breakouts, forechecking, zone entries and offensive and defensive team structure.
U15 Player Pathway
At SMHA, our U15 program follows the Hockey Canada Player Pathway as implemented by BC Hockey.
Development First
SMHA coaches continue prioritizing skill development through practices that support learning, confidence and long-term player growth.
Progressive Checking
U15 Rep players are introduced to body checking through Hockey Canada's progressive teaching model, with an emphasis on safety, confidence and proper technique. Body checking is not permitted in Recreational (C) hockey.
Team Play & Strategy
Players are introduced to more advanced offensive and defensive concepts while developing stronger positioning, communication and game awareness.

Our U15 program helps players build the habits, confidence and decision-making skills needed to progress successfully into U18 hockey.
This framework helps us provide a safe, positive and age-appropriate environment where players continue developing their skills, hockey IQ and confidence while preparing for U18 hockey.
RECREATIONAL and REP HOCKEY
SMHA offers both Recreational and Rep hockey at U15, allowing players and families to choose the pathway that best suits their goals, experience and desired level of commitment.

U15 is open to players who fall within Hockey Canada's U15 age division for the current season. Players of all skill levels are welcome, whether they are continuing from U13, new to Surrey Minor Hockey, or transferring from another association.

Body checking is permitted in U15 Rep (A) hockey only. It is introduced through Hockey Canada’s progressive teaching model, with coaches emphasizing proper technique, safety and confidence. Body checking is not permitted in U15 Recreational (C) hockey.

A hockey is the competitive Rep stream and requires players to participate in formal evaluations. Body checking is introduced at U15 within the Rep program. C hockey is the Recreational stream, with teams formed through divisional evaluations and balancing, and remains non-body-checking.

Yes. All players participate in evaluations to help ensure balanced team placement and provide the best possible playing experience for everyone. Players interested in Rep Hockey will also participate in the Rep evaluation process.

As players move into U15, practices and games become more demanding. Recreational teams generally follow a balanced schedule, while Rep teams typically have additional practices, games, tournaments and travel. Families should be prepared for a greater overall commitment than at U13.

Yes. Players interested in playing goal are welcome at the U15 level. Goaltenders receive position-specific coaching and development opportunities throughout the season whenever available.

U15 introduces a faster pace of play, more advanced team systems and increased physicality. Players continue developing their skating, puck skills and hockey IQ while learning to make quicker decisions and compete confidently in more challenging game situations.
