Head Coach
Lead practices, games and player development while creating a positive, inclusive and team-focused hockey environment.
Assistant Coach
Support player development, skill instruction and game management while working closely with the Head Coach and the rest of the coaching staff.
Team Staff
Team staff members play an important role in supporting coaches and players throughout the season. Depending on the team's needs, responsibilities may include team management, safety, communication and other administrative support that helps create a positive hockey experience.
Coaching & Team Staff Requirements
To help provide a safe, positive and rewarding hockey experience, coaches and team staff are expected to complete the certifications and requirements appropriate for their role.
Respect in Sport
Complete the Respect in Sport Activity Leader program as required by Hockey Canada and BC Hockey.
Criminal Record Check
A current Criminal Record Check is required for individuals working with young athletes.
Hockey Canada Certifications
Complete the coaching certifications appropriate for your position and division.
Coach Clinics
Attend required coaching clinics and development sessions as outlined by Hockey Canada and BC Hockey.
Safety Training
Safety Persons must complete the required safety training and maintain emergency preparedness procedures.
Division-Specific Qualifications
Additional certifications or qualifications may be required depending on the age division and coaching role.

Head Coach Applications
Interested individuals are encouraged to submit a Coaching Application. Applications are reviewed by the SMHA Coaching Committee before coaching assignments are made.
Assistant Coaches & Team Staff
Assistant Coaches and Team Staff are typically selected following Head Coach appointments based on the needs of each team.
