U21 Hockey

U21 gives players ages 18–20 the opportunity to continue playing organized minor hockey after U18. Whether competing in Recreational or Rep hockey, players can stay active, sharpen their skills, enjoy meaningful competition and remain connected to teammates and the hockey community.

U21 at a Glance

U21 is the final division within minor hockey and is intended for players who want to continue competing in an organized, team-based environment after U18.

SMHA offers Recreational and Rep pathways, giving players the opportunity to choose the level of competition and commitment that best fits their goals and circumstances.

Ages 18–20

For players who are 18, 19 or 20 years old during the applicable hockey season.

Full-Ice Hockey

Players participate in full-ice practices and games using established rules, positions and team systems.

Recreational & Rep

Players may participate in Recreational (C) hockey or try out for competitive Rep (A) hockey.

Body Checking in Rep Hockey

Body checking is permitted in U21 Rep hockey. Recreational (C) hockey is non-body-checking.

Continued Competition

Players can continue testing their skills in meaningful league and playoff competition.

Final Minor Hockey Division

U21 provides an opportunity to enjoy up to three additional seasons of organized minor hockey after U18.

Whether playing Recreational or Rep hockey, players can stay active, challenge themselves and continue enjoying the game alongside teammates of a similar age.

RECREATIONAL and REP HOCKEY

SMHA offers both Recreational and Rep hockey at U21, allowing players to choose the pathway that best reflects their experience, competitive goals and preferred level of commitment.

Recreational (C) Hockey

A competitive, non-body-checking environment designed for players who want to continue enjoying organized hockey while balancing work, post-secondary education and other commitments. Recreational hockey emphasizes sportsmanship, teamwork and a positive playing experience while allowing players to remain active and connected to the game.

Rep (A) Hockey

A higher level of competition for players seeking a greater commitment to practices, games and tournaments. Body checking is permitted in U21 Rep hockey, with continued emphasis on safe technique, responsible play, teamwork and respect for opponents.
